Somaskandar-Siva and Parvati

  In this Somaskanda representation, Shiva is seated in the sukhasana pose, with his left leg folded and depicted with four hands. His upper two hands perform the kartarimukha-hasta, holding an ankusha (elephant goad) in the right, and a deer in the left. His lower right hand performs the pataka-hasta and his lower left hand performs the kapittha. His consort, Parvati, is portrayed seated in a sukhasana pose, with her right leg folded and her left leg stretched. She is represented with two hands performing the kapittha-hasta. This murti only depicts Siva and Parvati it does not include Murugan.

This graceful form of Shiva is infused with such artistic grace that it has come to represent all in Indian art, dance, and music. It possesses fluidity and flow of dance, purity of music and beauty of art. In this remarkably standardized form, the god is shown dancing within a flaming halo (prabha mandala) which represents time and which is shown as a circle to symbolize the Hindu belief that it is both cyclical and without end. This statue is 16 inches from base to top of the tallest flame and weighs 10 kg.  It is a classic example of the Chola Lost Wax Bronze casting process. The hundreds of hours of human energy in the form of wax molding, casting, rough/fine filing, and the final detail chiseling shine through in the completely unique face of this Siva Nataraja, truly one of a kind.  Nataraja’s right foot stands on Apasmara (ignorance personified).  - armed with dagger and a detailed tiny shield.  Shiva’s left foot is raised in dance movement.  A simple belt tied around his torso is shown flowing to his left and an erect Cobra sits on his right arm.  He holds Damaru (hourglass drum) in his upper right hand and Agnishikha (flame) in left. His lower right hand is gestured in Abhaya Mudra (assurance or granting fearlessness) and left hand dangles down, relaxed gracefully in Gajahasta Mudra. He wears his hair as a crown, studded with stork feathers. His free-flowing hairs bear Ganga depicted as a mermaid on the right side and a snake on the left.  The male and female earrings in his ears respectively symbolize Shiva’s completeness.  The sculpture rests on a double pedestal of lotus and square. Sarasvati is the Hindu goddess of Wisdom, Speech and Learning and consort of Brahma the creator. She resides in the Vedic mantras and is the patroness of all types of knowledge, particularly of music.  In this beautiful bronze sculpture, she is seen four-armed, sitting on a lotus pedestal, the lotus sits upon a rectangular base. She holds an Akshamala (rosary) in her upper right hand that is indicative of Manana (unbroken reflection) that is crucial to any type of learning and Pustaka (book) in her upper left hand which represents all knowledge.  She plays Vina (lute) with her lower hands, which gave birth to the seven root sounds on which all music is based. There is an ornate crown upon her head fitting a goddess of her beauty and talents. Her right leg is bent in a graceful supportive manner, allowing her to keep her back straight and her left leg hangs down and rests upon the rectangular base further supporting her posture. Vinadhara Siva

This particular form Siva is known as Vinadhara or “Veena Player”, the Lord of Music.  A title he borrows from Saraswati.  The pose is called is called “Veena Player” because Shiva’s two front hands are in the position they would be if he was playing a veena.  The veena is missing as it is in all Vinadhara sculptures.  In Shiva’s other two hands he holds an axe as well as a deer.  The deer shows how all animals see Shiva as their lord and revere him. The god is standing in elegant Tribhanga pose on a round lotus base in a frontal pose with all his well-built limbs correctly proportioned.  The sculptures elegance is displayed in the play of curves and angles that harmonize into a serene stature one can gaze at with reverence.  The simple loin cloth is suggestive of a piece of elephant hide.  With the minimalist loin cloth, ornamented belts and elaborate crown the sculpture manages to appear lavishly dressed.  The feet have each a course of 3 loose padasaras.  The toes have rings on the big and little toes, there is a footrest under the right foot not to be mistaken for a sandal.  The left leg in in Kunchita(slightly bent) and is held in position by a squatting singing ghana.  The ghanas left hand receives the toe of assurance of the god while his right hand is in singing gesticulation in gratitude of such assurance. Siva is considered to be the creator and Master of Yoga, Music and Dancing. He is very popular in the south by the name Dakshinamurti.  This statue is sometimes referred to as the Lord of Music form of Siva as Dakshinamurti. Not to be confused with the seated Dakshinamurti who is shown under a banyan tree enlightening attending rishis with one foot on mythical Apasmara crushing the ego of man.
